Traumatic injury tied to higher risk of mental health hospitalization

A new study finds that people who suffer traumatic injuries are at a higher risk of being hospitalized for mental health conditions. Researchers analyzed data from more than 19,000 people in Ontario who had experienced major injuries that left them hospitalized. Most of those injuries were accidental, like car crashes or falls. People who experienced traumatic injuries were at a 40 percent higher risk of hospitalization for mental health conditions — and that risk was particularly pronounced among children, those whose injuries required surgery, and men. The authors say all trauma victims should be offered mental health support after their injuries are treated.
