Perceptions of quality and safety and experience of adverse events in 27 European Union healthcare systems, 2009–2013.
Patient perceptions may provide insight into the quality and safety of care provided as well as identify opportunities to target improvement efforts more effectively. Investigators examined data from surveys administered in 2009 and 2013 in 27 European Union member nations to understand changes in public perceptions of health care during a period of economic constraints. In 2013, respondents were more inclined to believe that it was likely to experience harm in both hospital and nonhospital settings as compared to 2009. The authors suggest that these results may have important policy implications.
