Scientists want out of a new stem cell documentary

Experts featured in a new documentary series on regenerative medicine are asking to be removed from the feature after learning that it was partly funded by for-profit stem cell clinics currently being investigated by the FDA for promoting unapproved therapies, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. One of the funders is Cell Surgical Network, which is among the largest for-profit stem cell clinic networks in the country. A trailer for the documentary also claims that stem cell technology is here “NOW!,” when experts told the Chronicle that they had repeated their beliefs that stem cell technologies were still many years away from being ready for the clinic. The 10-part documentary series was set to premiere today, but the filmmakers told the Chronicle that they may delay the premiere because of the pushback from scientists.
