WHO says Ebola outbreak is not a global emergency
The WHO on Friday decided for the third time against declaring the current Ebola outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. Officials said that although the outbreak was serious, it did not meet the criteria for a widespread declaration. Still, some experts had hoped that declaring a global emergency would have sped up response to the current outbreak, which is the second largest in history. Just last week, Ebola spread from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to neighboring Uganda and a 5-year-old boy and his grandmother died there. Others in their family are now ill with the disease. In the DRC, more than 1,400 people have died, with more than 2,100 cases overall.
