Mass. city looks to open supervised drug consumption site next year
The mayor of Somerville, Mass., a city near Boston, says he plans to open a supervised drug consumption site sometime next year. Proponents of such sites — where people can use illegal drugs under medical supervision — argue that such programs can help reduce drug overdose deaths. "Under the status quo, people will continue to die,” Mayor Joseph Curtatone told WBUR. “We need to be bold to take on an epidemic.” Philadelphia, Seattle, and other cities have been working on opening their own sites, but none have yet been approved in the U.S. Federal prosecutors have already indicated that they will crack down on such facilities.
