To examine the extent to which state offices of rural health (SORH) are engaging with recent substance use disorder and opioid use disorder initiatives in their states, this six-page issue brief scans how SORH are aiding their rural communities. It includes some successful strategies and available resources, intended to showcase the efforts of SORH and their key rural health stakeholders, to aid others as they incorporate successful substance use disorder and opioid use disorder strategies. According to a recent national poll summarized in this 27-page report, the majority of adults are unprepared to step in to help in a major medical emergency until help arrives. Among those who participated in the survey, adults believe on average it would take approximately 12 minutes for medical emergency services to arrive to a situation after being, called regardless of their geographic location. While eight in 10 adults feel prepared to effectively communicate with 911 operators if they’re the first person on the scene of a medical emergency, adults feel unprepared when it comes to providing more “hands-on” assistance. This 29-minute webinar discusses the Health Resources and Services Administration Rural Communities Opioid Response Program, which strengthens the organizational and infrastructure capacity of multi-sector consortiums to address opioid prevention, treatment, and recovery. The Lake Plains Community Care Network's program focuses on reducing the opioid morbidity and mortality in its region with a consortium that addresses prevention, treatment, and recovery at the community and regional levels.
