Inside STAT: Hospitals differ sharply in what patient data they give Google

Google’s latest partnership with Ascension has made headlines the past few days as federal regulators probe whether the patient privacy law known as HIPAA was followed when the Catholic hospital chain shared millions of patients’ data with the tech giant. But Google has struck other similar deals recently — and some have also raised privacy concerns. One such data-sharing collaboration, with the University of Chicago, triggered a lawsuit in which the two organizations were accused of not removing identifiable information from doctor’s notes and date stamps of when patients checked in and out of the hospital. The different deals seem to have different standards for protecting patient privacy, and the discrepancies are raising questions about how well patients can control the use of their data.
