Nearly 20% of people in the U.S. used tobacco last year

Although the number of people using tobacco has steadily declined in recent years, a new CDC report found that in 2018, nearly 1 in 5 people still reported using such products. Here’s what else you need to know:
  • Overall trends: Nearly 20% of people last year reported using any tobacco products, while around 84% of tobacco users said they smoked it in some form. Around 4% of current users used more than one type of product.
  • Types of products: Cigarettes were the most commonly used form of tobacco, although cigarette smoking is at an all-time low — fewer than 14% of people in 2018 said they smoked cigarettes.
  • Demographic trends: Males were more likely to use tobacco than females, as were those in the 25-44 age group. American Indian/Alaskan Natives were more likely than people of other racial groups to use tobacco.
