Pups wanted: Researchers are looking for 10,000 dogs to study aging
Attention all dog owners! Researchers from the University of Washington and Texas A&M are recruiting 10,000 dogs of all breeds and ages for a 10-year project to understand how genes, environmental factors, and habits affect canine aging. For instance, beyond owner observations, there are few standardized measurements to test the physical abilities of a dog as it gets older, and the new study would aim to identify such qualities. The project will work off of pet DNA samples, vet records, gut microbes, and information on food and walks — and canine participants will live at home with their normal routine. Researchers also hope to gain insights on human longevity, as diseases that afflict dogs also affect humans.
