Abortions in the U.S. have decreased by nearly 25% since 2007
The latest abortion surveillance report from the CDC, for 2016, finds that the number of abortions has decreased by nearly 25% since 2007. Here’s more:
- Overall trends: There were more than 623,000 abortions in 2016, a 2% decrease since 2015. At the same time, the number of abortions in 2016 decreased by 24% since 2007.
- Type of abortions: Almost two-thirds of abortions were performed at or before eight weeks of gestation. Fewer than 8% of the abortions were performed after 14 weeks of gestation, with only about 1% after 21 weeks.
- By age: Women in their 20s accounted for the majority of the procedures. Teens ages 15-19 accounted for nearly 1 in 10 of all abortions. Fewer than 4% of the abortions were in women aged 40 and older.
