Shared Use in the Summer: Opening School Spaces to the Public When Classes Are Out
Schools are more than just places of learning for children—they serve as centers of connection for families from surrounding neighborhoods and have facilities and resources that can benefit the wider community. School spaces can be used for many types of activities, such as community gardens, cultural events, and farmers’ markets. In collaboration with the Merced County Public Health Department in California, ChangeLab Solutions developed an infographic that shows the possibilities for shared-use agreements with schools. It highlights the health and equity benefits of opening school spaces to the general public. A companion list of sources lists opportunities for further research.
