Majority of Americans support keeping Roe v. Wade in place
Today marks the 47th anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade, and a new poll on abortion from the Kaiser Family Foundation finds that nearly 70% of Americans don’t want the decision overturned. Here’s more:
- Roe v. Wade: 69% of respondents say that the Roe v. Wade ruling protecting access to abortion needs to remain in place. This majority was driven by Democratic respondents, 91% of whom support the ruling, versus 41% of Republicans.
- State regulations: Two-thirds of respondents think recent state laws limiting when abortions can be performed are designed to be restrictive, while a third believe they're meant to protect the health and safety of women.
- Abortion knowledge: 30% correctly indicated that the majority of abortions are performed before eight weeks into pregnancy. Only a tenth of respondents knew that very few abortions occur after 20 weeks of gestation.
