Trump is facing his biggest outbreak emergency — and experts are worried
With a handful of U.S. cases of the new coronavirus from travelers from China, a question has emerged: How will Trump handle what could be his biggest public health challenge? The president has been almost silent so far on social media about the coronavirus, in stark contrast to the Ebola outbreak in 2014, when he tweeted, “STOP THE FLIGHTS! NO VISAS FROM EBOLA STRICKEN COUNTRIES.” As this current outbreak spreads, Trump is not surrounded by seasoned advisers on public health, and veterans of other disease epidemics tell STAT contributor Maggie Fox they’re worried how Trump will respond.
These concerns add to other unanswered questions about the new virus, including how dangerous the infection is (it’s still too early to know), and whether draconian measures — such as cutting off transit pathways — are likely to work. To date, there have been more than 4,500 cases of the disease in mainland China, and 106 people have died.
