Lawmakers to discuss disparities in maternal and infant mortality
The impeachment trial may be the big story in D.C., but here are some health hearings today to keep an eye on. This morning, a House Education and Labor subcommittee is meeting with the leaders from three nonprofit health groups to address disparities in maternal and infant mortality. Black mothers and infants have mortality rates that are two to three times higher than those of other racial groups. At the same time, the House Ways and Means Committee is discussing proposals for paid family and medical leave, as the U.S. is among a minority of nations without mandated paid family or maternity leave.
Also this morning, a House Judiciary subcommittee will cover whether illegal fentanyl-like substances should still be classified as Schedule I drugs, the DEA’s strictest category. The Senate already voted to extend the ban on such substances, but the House has yet to do so.
