The FDA might get a new name — and a different role
The Trump administration’s plan to reorganize HHS and the agencies that fall under its umbrella is out. Many of the proposals would still require Congressional action. Here’s a look at three of the ideas:
- Rename the FDA: The plan would axe the “food” from the Food and Drug Administration. It would merge the USDA's food safety and inspection branch and the FDA's food safety offices into a single agency within the USDA. The FDA would stay the FDA — but it would stand for the Federal Drug Administration.
- Shift responsibility for nutrition assistance: The proposal would move SNAP and WIC — two major nutrition assistance programs — from the FDA to HHS. It also suggests renaming HHS to be the Department of Health and Public Welfare.
- Cut down the public health corps: The administration wants to reduce the size of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, which carries out federal public health and disease prevention programs. It also aims to build up the Reserve Corps for public health emergencies.
