You may have seen last week’s email about the launch of our new HerbList™ app! We’d like to introduce some of the useful information available through this app, and so we will be highlighting popular herbs over the next few weeks.

What do you know about kava? Is it safe, effective? What are its uses? Kava is a popular herb but one with some serious safety concerns. People use kava as a dietary supplement for anxiety. The root and underground stem of the herb may be used to prepare drinks or be made into extracts, capsules, or tablets.

Kava supplements may actually have a small effect on reducing anxiety, but their use has been linked to a risk of severe liver disease. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has warned health care providers and the public about the risk of liver damage associated with kava. Long-term or heavy use of kava has also been associated with other side effects including dry, scaly skin, yellowing of the skin, heart problems, and eye irritation.

Perhaps you have considered using kava (or other herbs) but could not find research-based information. The HerbList app gives fast, free access to summaries on more than 50 herbs and can be easily accessed from your mobile device!
