Does impeachment have a pharma angle?
Drug makers are again at the receiving end of a presidential tirade: In an hourlong speech yesterday afternoon, President Trump doubled down on his criticisms of the pharma industry — even implying, STAT’s Nicholas Florko writes, that it may have been behind the recent push to open formal impeachment proceedings.
“We’re lowering the cost of prescription drugs, taking on the pharmaceutical companies. And you think that’s easy? It’s not easy. … They come at you from all different sides. I wouldn’t be surprised if the hoax didn’t come a little bit from some of the people that we are taking on,” he said.
Formally, the address was meant to unveil an executive order aimed at strengthening Medicare, but things got a little tangential — with Trump wishing aloud that drug company stocks would drop, and promising he doesn’t “care about the [drug] companies.”
(Meanwhile, last week, Congress passed a drug pricing bill that should save the government $3 billion — and no one really noticed.)
