This 20-page report summarizes a series of five regional workshops that were part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Gulf Research Program, held between December 2018 and May 2019 to gather feedback at the local and regional levels to identify opportunities to improve preparedness for oil spills. The five regions identified for this national collaborative effort—the West Coast, mid-Atlantic, Alaska, and eastern and western Gulf of Mexico—are all home to communities that have been impacted by oil spills. Each workshop focused on three broadly defined topical areas: minimizing health, social, and economic disruptions after oil spills. (PDF)

This 58-page report highlights priorities for the eastern Gulf region, identified by a diverse audience convened at two workshops in Mobile and Bayou La Batre, Alabama, on May 6–7, 2019, to gather local input from communities that have been or are likely to be impacted by oil spills. Participants focused on three broadly defined themes: building resilience to future events, incorporating human health and societal needs into oil spill response, and understanding risk before, during, and after a spill. The workshops were sponsored by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Gulf Research Program, and the Sea Grant Program. (PDF)

This 56-page report highlights priorities for the western Gulf region, identified by a diverse set of participants convened in Houma, Louisiana, on December 4 and 5, 2018, to gather local input from communities that have been or are likely to be impacted by oil spills. Participants focused on four themes to minimize health, social, and economic disruptions after oil spills: effectively integrating human health, community well-being, and social dynamics into local and regional response planning; building economic resilience to future events and creating a transparent compensation process; creating a network for effective risk communication; and developing disaster recovery programs based on audience needs. The workshop was sponsored by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Gulf Research Program, and the Sea Grant Program. (PDF)

This 58-page report summarizes a workshop held in Anchorage, Alaska, in February 2019 to gather feedback at the local and regional level to identify opportunities for improving preparedness for the public health, social disruption, and economic impacts of oil spills. Discussion topics included impacts to mixed subsistence economies, commercial fishing, and tourism; effective integration of human health and community well-being into local and regional response planning; and how to better prepare communities for an oil spill. The workshop was sponsored by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Gulf Research Program, and the Sea Grant Program. (PDF)

This 26-page white paper proposes the next generation of disaster data infrastructure, which includes both novel and the most essential information systems and services that a country or a region can depend on to successfully gather, process, and display disaster data to reduce the impact of natural hazards. Several future scenarios of disaster management are developed based on existing disaster management systems and communication technology, and fundamental requirements of next generation disaster data infrastructure inspired by the proposed scenarios are discussed. This 40-page report documents the outcomes of a West Coast workshop held in April 2019, which focused on Santa Barbara, CA, to identify research needs to improve oil spill preparedness and response with respect to public health, social disruption, and economic impacts. The workshop goals were to share lessons learned from the 2015 Refugio oil spill; examine opportunities for community involvement in oil spill response; review best practices; and improve future preparation. The workshop was sponsored by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Gulf Research Program, and the Sea Grant Program. (PDF)

This 24-page report summarizes a workshop held in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in March 2019, to raise awareness of the topical areas related to oil spills, listen to those directly affected by spills, identify regional level needs and priorities for improving preparedness, promote networking among groups who may not have previously interacted, and identify resources to address gaps. This regional workshop focused on public health, social disruption, and economic impacts with the aim to identify regional-level needs and priorities for improving preparedness. It was sponsored by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Gulf Research Program, and the Sea Grant Program. (PDF)

Source: Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR). Published: 5/2019. This 49-page working paper summarizes the key results and lessons learned in disaster risk reduction in health during this nine-year Health and Emergency and Disaster Risk Management (EDRM) program in China. Many of its reported impacts, knowledge increases, and behavior changes were found to be statistically significant in the immediate post-disaster intervention in terms of proper hand-washing technique, anti-indoor smoking, non-communicable diseases, waste management, oral rehydration solution (ORS) preparation, and disaster bag preparedness. It is part of a Working Paper Series on disaster risk research. (PDF)
