Inside STAT: Millennials caring for parents with Alzheimer’s face agonizing challenges
Instead of the usual conversations about work, relationships, or any of the other parts of daily life, 34-year-old Kamaria Moore-Hollis’ relationship with her mother is based on being her caregiver. “I grieved her loss probably five years ago,” she says. Her mother was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s before Moore-Hollis was even 30. From navigating insurance paperwork to hunting for day programs and doctors, “I don’t have an adult relationship with my mother,” she tells STAT’s Megan Thielking. Others are increasingly finding themselves in a similar position, but millennials like Moore-Hollis — because they are often less financially stable and are still trying to launch their careers or even start college — are hit especially hard.
