New poll finds concerning use of antibiotics among older adults
A new survey of more than 2,000 older adults ages 50-80 finds that many of them have erroneous or otherwise concerning views when it comes to using antibiotics. Here’s more:
- Viral infections: Antibiotics are intended for bacterial infections, but about a third believe that taking these medicines will help get over a cold or flu sooner. More than 40% expect a doctor to prescribe an antibiotic if the illness has lasted for a long time.
- Prescriptions: Just over half say that physicians overprescribe antibiotics, a phenomenon that has been linked to growing antibiotic resistance. About 1 in 5 report taking such drugs without talking to a doctor.
- Perceptions: At the same time, the majority of respondents said they are cautious about the use of antibiotics, and that overuse could lead to them not working the next time they’re needed.
