This 39-page pager examines the impacts of local exposure to school shootings on an important indicator of youth mental health: the use of prescription antidepressants. It analyzes the effects of 44 school shootings on youth antidepressant use in a difference-in-difference framework, and finds that local exposure to fatal school shootings increases youth antidepressant use by 21.4 percent in the following two years.
