Scientific American op-ed piece draws criticism

Scientific American is in hot water over a post published last week on its blog network. The piece, titled “Doctors are not Gods,” has since been taken down and replaced with an editor's note saying the publication found the piece didn't "meet our editorial standards." The op-ed took particular aim at Dr. Jen Gunter, an OB-GYN who has built her brand on challenging unscientific claims about women’s health, including takedowns of products sold by Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle website Goop. The author of the piece, journalist Jennifer Block, took issue with the way Gunter pushes back against things that aren’t explicitly backed by science. "If we dismiss everything that isn’t patented or presciption-only [sic], we dismiss people’s lived experiences," Block wrote. (A snapshot of the piece was captured by the Wayback Machine.) Gunter fired back on Twitter, saying that she wasn’t contacted by Block for comment. Block has since shared that she should have reached out to Gunter, but said that she stands by her piece
