Students answer the question: Why is federal research funding important?
The Science Coalition — a nonprofit that advocates for research funding — just announced the winners of its “Fund It Forward” video challenge for undergraduate and graduate students. Students created short videos sharing why their projects matter, and why continued federal support for such research is important. University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Sumit Kar was the winner among graduate students. In his video, he had a fellow lab member — whose brother has type 1 diabetes — describe the lab’s NIH-funded work on the disease and how it impacts the heart. Another notable winner: Alissa Wuorinen, an undergraduate at Marquette University, who explained that disruptions in circadian rhythms could explain many physical and mental health conditions.
