AHRQ Innovations Exchange: Innovations and Tools to Improve Quality and Reduce Disparities

People exchanging ideas

The AHRQ Health Care Innovations Exchange is expanding efforts to scale up and spread innovations by sponsoring three Learning Communities (LCs) that aim to improve care. The Innovations Exchange defines a learning community as a select group of potential innovation adopters and stakeholders who interact and engage in a shared learning process to facilitate adaptation and implementation of innovations featured in the Innovations Exchange. Each LC will convene participants around a specific, common challenge in health care delivery that represents a high-priority topic area identified by AHRQ.
Participants in each LC will work together in an interactive group setting and leverage Innovations Exchange content to address a defined problem, adopting elements of specific innovations or innovation “clusters.” The cluster concept is designed to provide LCs an array of strategies and solutions; by selecting a range of innovations, participants can adapt and tailor innovations to their organizations’ specific needs and unique contexts. Participants will receive technical assistance and support from nationally-recognized experts to help them implement these innovative strategies. We anticipate that a shared learning approach coupled with expert guidance will help spread successful efforts identified in the Innovations Exchange collection and improve health care delivery.
We will periodically provide updates related to the development and progress of the LCs. This information will include the aim of each LC, membership, topics of focus, related innovation profiles and QualityTools, early results, and promising practices.
In the future, we expect to make available products and resources related to work of the LCs on the Innovations Exchange Web site to support the dissemination of results. These products may include case studies, issue briefs, and videos that capture key findings and lessons learned. It is anticipated that the collective work of the LCs along with a subsequent evaluation of the effort will yield generalizable knowledge and insight about factors that influence adoption and scaling of innovations, contributing to advancements in the field.

Topic Areas

The Innovations Exchange has identified the following high-priority topic areas for the LCs:
  • Advancing the Practice of Patient- and Family-Centered Care in Hospitals
  • Reducing Non-Urgent Emergency Services
  • Promoting Medication Therapy Management for At-Risk Populations
Development of new Innovations Exchange content (Innovation Profiles, QualityTools, and articles) in the coming months will focus exclusively on these topic areas and the work of the LCs.
