Image of a white blood cell attacking a fungus wins MGH image contest

THE WINNING IMAGE, CALLED "NEUTROPHIL ATTACK!" (ADAM VIENS)
The winner of the Massachusetts General Hospital Research Institute image contest was announced late last week: a photo titled “Neutrophil Attack!”, depicting a mouse white blood cell recognizing and engulfing a type of fungus. The contest — now in its second year — received 46 submissions across the 15 departments and centers at the institute. This year’s top image was taken by Adam Viens, a research technician in the infectious diseases and regenerative medicine divisions at MGH. The other eight finalists include images of structural changes in the brain and of an MRI machine from the perspective of the magnet room. The winning image will be featured in MGH’s in-house magazine and, along with the other finalists, will be displayed in the lobby of one of MGH’s main buildings.
