Inside STAT: Cancer researcher named first STAT Biomedical Innovation Award winner

It’s an exciting day here as we gear up for a full day of events at the inaugural STAT Summit. Among the highlights today: awarding the first-ever STAT Biomedical Innovation Award to longtime cancer researcher Dr. Charles Sawyers of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Sawyers is being recognized for developing two blockbuster drugs: Gleevec for chronic myelogenous leukemia, and Xtandi for prostate cancer. In a new Q&A, Sawyers outlines some of the milestones over his 34-year career, details the moment when he knew Gleevec was going to be a big deal, and shares his hopes — and fears — for the future of science. Read my conversation with Sawyers here
