Scoop: Republicans are investigating opioid manufacturers — again
If you thought Congress was done investigating opioid manufacturers, think twice. Three familiar names are once again under Capitol Hill’s microscope, Republican congressional aides told STAT: Purdue Pharma, Insys, and Mallinckrodt.
A trio of GOP congressmen is reviving a dormant investigation into those three companies, claiming that Purdue and Insys didn’t fully respond to questions posed by the Energy and Commerce Committee in 2018. The lawmakers also requested a briefing from Mallinckrodt leadership in the wake of a former employee’s allegations that she alerted the company to flaws in its suspicious order monitoring system and that the company failed to act.
A lot has changed, however, since the investigation first began nearly two years ago. Sentencing began just yesterday for former Insys CEO John Kapoor, recently convicted of racketeering. Purdue filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September. And in recent months Mallinckrodt, partly thanks to its perceived role in the opioid crisis, has seen its stock value fall to an all-time low.
