Trends in Opioids Prescribed at Discharge From Emergency Departments Among Adults: United States, 2006–2017

This 12-page report describes trends in opioid prescribing at emergency department (ED) discharge among adults from 2006–2007 through 2016–2017, by selected patient and hospital characteristics and the type of opioids prescribed. The overall percentage of all ED visits by adults at which opioids were prescribed at discharge increased from 19.0 percent in 2006–2007 to 21.5 percent in 2010–2011, and decreased to 14.6 percent in 2016–2017.
