Heterosexual sex is the second most common route of transmission
of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the United States. The
National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS) collects HIV
prevalence and risk behavior data from three populations at high risk
for HIV infection: men who have sex with men, injecting drug users,
and heterosexuals at increased risk for HIV infection. This report
summarizes data from the second NHBS data collection cycle among
heterosexuals at increased risk for HIV, which was conducted during
June–December 2010.
