Mosaic, the Wellcome Trust-funded science magazine, will shutter

Mosaic, the online magazine funded by the Wellcome Center in the U.K., is shutting down next week after more than five years of publishing long-form science and health journalism stories, some of which I shared here with Morning Rounds readers. A blog post from Wellcome’s director of communications explains that the decision was a result of diverging interests, mainly that Wellcome wants to communicate science that aligns with the organization’s public health goals. Mosaic would have also needed more financial support than it had been receiving — and forcing it to only focus on Wellcome’s priority areas would have changed Mosaic’s “ethos and character,” the post says, adding, “It just wasn’t possible to square the circle in the end.” Mosaic’s final stories will be published next Tuesday, Dec. 10.
