Tufts will scour Sackler name from its medical campus

As lawsuits stack up against members of the Sackler family over their alleged role in igniting the opioid crisis, Tufts University announced it would strip the name from a graduate school, buildings, and health programs. Tufts is the first major university to remove the Sackler name — in July, the Louvre excised the name from one of its wings. Tufts also released a report from outside lawyers that found evidence that OxyContin-maker Purdue Pharma, which the Sackler family controls, was “successful in exercising influence, whether directly or indirectly,” in a few instances at Tufts. The lawyers further stated that they believed the company intended to use the relationship “to advance its own interests.” Although Tufts isn't returning any of the family’s or Purdue's $15 million in donations, it plans to create a $3 million endowment for, among other things, addiction prevention and treatment programs.
