Can the CRISPR patent ruling be overturned?

The CRISPR patent circus recommences: The University of California v. the Broad Institute is under review yet again, with oral arguments being heard today in Washington, D.C. by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.The patent office, if you recall, ruled last year that the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing patent filed by the Broad and Feng Zhang was different than the one filed earlier by UC Berkeley and Jennifer Doudna — and therefore was still valid.

Today’s case appeals that patent decision, asking for a reinterpretation. We’re not expecting any surprises here — no damning evidence on CRISPR chronology will be queued up in this case.

But does UC have a shot at winning this whole thing?
