Training medical students to be successful community health advocates - On Health

Sarah Ziegenhorn

Sarah Ziegenhorn is a medical student at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She is also a co-founder and Executive Director of the Iowa Harm Reduction Coalition, a community-based organization that works with people who inject drugs and conducts advocacy, education, and outreach. Sarah holds a B.A. in Geography and Community Health from Macalester College and was previously a Research Associate at the Institute of Medicine in Washington, D.C. Her research interests include substance use during pregnancy, the intersection of reproductive health and criminal justice, hepatitis C treatment access, and the impacts of racism on health care delivery and outcomes.

Needle exchange programs are an effective way to promote health among people who inject drugs. A new commentary published in Substance Use Prevention, Treatment, and Policy describes the important role health professions students can take in needle exchange programs and the benefits to both themselves and the community.
