HHS Awards $60 million to Support Community Health Centers Impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria
September 6 - Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded nearly $60 million to 161 community health centers in six southern states and two U.S. territories that were impacted by hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Capital Assistance for Hurricane Response and Recovery Efforts (CARE) funding will help ensure continued access to primary health care services at community health centers in areas affected by the hurricanes.
“Health centers serve as lifelines to services and networks of resources in their communities every day, and especially during a crisis,” said HHS Secretary Alex Azar. “These grants build on other HHS investments to ensure that health centers can continue to serve communities impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, and strengthen their readiness to respond to the needs of the community after future hurricanes or other disasters.”

First Lady Confronts Bullying
First Lady Melania Trump spoke last month at a day-long summit on cyberbullying prevention, stressing "the importance of teaching our next generation how to conduct themselves safely and in a positive manner in an online setting."
The summit included a panel discussion with representatives of Google, Facebook, Twitter and the Family Online Safety Institute about industry efforts to improve the reporting of cyberbullying incidents and hurtful content while enlisting the help of parents, teachers, school administrators, police and others to become active participants in cleaning up abuse on the Internet.

Rural Opioid Grantees Convene

HRSA Administrator Dr. George Sigounas (center) told rural grantees at a meeting last month that they are central to agency efforts to "respond to the care and treatment needs of individuals with opioid use disorder," calling the crisis "a national issue with tremendous negative impact for rural communities."
HRSA Awards $600K for Rural Children & Families
HRSA has awarded $600,000 through the Rural Health Integration Models for Parents and Children to Thrive (IMPACT) program. The funding will implement evidence-based, two-generational strategies that promote the health and well-being of young rural children and create economic opportunities for their families. It will build on lessons learned from the initial Rural IMPACT demonstration, including providing direct support and tailored technical assistance to communities.
Performance measures will align with HRSA’s Maternal, Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting program.

The new website features interactive maps, dashboards, query tools, fact sheets, and downloadable data related to HRSA-funded health centers, grants, loan repayment and scholarship programs, Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs), organ donation, and other programs. It provides national summary data and lets you drill-down to the state, county, regional, and Congressional district levels.

Register to be an Exhibitor
There's still time to register as a participant or an exhibitor at the 2018 National Ryan White Conference on HIV Care and Treatment. The 2018 National Ryan White Conference will take place December 11-14, 2018, at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center at National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. This year's theme is "Catalyzing Success: Advancing Innovation. Leveraging Data. Ending the HIV Epidemic."
Registration is free, however space is limited. Registration will close on September 28 or once a maximum of 4,500 participants have been registered and confirmed.
There are also opportunities for exhibiting at this year's conference. The exhibit hall is the center point of the meeting, where attendees will find state and federal agencies in the Federal Village, as well as researchers, advocacy partners, foundations, national HIV/AIDS service organizations, and other groups involved in HIV care and treatment in the main exhibit hall.

The Ryan White CARE Act Turned 28
August 18 marked the 28th anniversary of the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act. First authorized in 1990, the Ryan White CARE Act is the legislation that created the Health Resources and Services Administration’s HIV/AIDS Bureau’s (HRSA HAB) Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program.
The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program provides a comprehensive system of HIV primary medical care, medications, and essential support services for low-income people living with HIV. The Program funds grants to states, cities/counties, and local community-based organizations. More than half of people living with diagnosed HIV in the United States – more than 500,000 people – receive services through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. In 2016, 84.9% of Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program clients were virally suppressed, exceeding the national average of approximately 60%.

Health Centers Recognized for Quality
Maria Gomez, CEO of Mary's Center in Washington, D.C., received a $200,000 Quality Improvement grant Wednesday, August 15, from HHS Deputy Secretary Eric Hargan and HRSA Administrator Dr. George Sigounas. The agency issued $125 million in awards to 1,352 grantees during Health Center Week.

Regional Grants Management Workshop
On August 1-2, nearly 100 HRSA grantee representatives from around the country participated in a two-day grants management workshop at the San Francisco Regional Office. The workshop featured presentations by subject matter experts. HRSA’s regional staff hosted and supported the meeting, which included a long-distance welcome by the Office of Federal Assistance Management (OFAM) Deputy Administrator Rimas Liogys and in person welcoming remarks by HRSA Administrator, Dr. George Sigounas. The workshop’s 12 breakout sessions covered everything that a grantee should know about managing grants or cooperative agreements, from Grants 101 to the closeout process. The San Francisco workshop built on the success of the previous workshop conducted at HRSA Headquarters in May. HRSA plans to continue the collaboration with additional workshops in 2019.
