Primary keratinocytes can be difficult to culture and are short lived, but NIAID has developed a method of immortalizing primary keratinocytes by treating cells with a defined chemical compound. These could be used for human papillomavirus (HPV) investigation, testing of therapeutics, skin graft generation and other medical applications.
