Purpose of the CAHPS Database

The primary purpose of the CAHPS Database is to facilitate comparisons of CAHPS survey results by and among survey sponsors. This compilation of survey results from a large pool of survey users into a national database enables participants to compare their own results to relevant benchmarks (i.e., reference points such as national and regional averages). The CAHPS Database also offers an important source of primary data for research related to patient and consumer assessments of quality as measured by CAHPS surveys.

What's Included in the Database?

The CAHPS Database currently contains data from the CAHPS Health Plan Survey and the CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey.  The CAHPS Database will continue to expand as the number and variety of CAHPS survey instruments grows.

Health Plan

The Health Plan Survey component has served as the core of the CAHPS Database since its inception in 1998. Since that time, hundreds of health plans, purchaser groups, State agencies, and others have participated in this component by submitting yearly results from the CAHPS Health Plan Survey.
Participants include public and private employers, State Medicaid agencies, Children's Health Insurance Programs (CHIP), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), individual health plans, and the Department of Defense. Each year, the CAHPS Database aggregates nearly 100,000 individual survey responses, which are used to develop a variety of products and services.
The CAHPS Database offers several products for organizations participating in the CAHPS Health Plan Survey Database. These include an Online Reporting System that allows users to view, print and download custom reports of CAHPS Health Plan Survey results. CAHPS Health Plan Survey results are provided for commercial (adult and child), Medicaid (adult and child), and Medicare (adult) populations for the two most recent years of data.  Participating organizations submitting data to the CAHPS Database can view their own results compared to appropriate benchmarks derived from the national, regional and product-type distributions on a password-protected section of the Online Reporting System.
CAHPS Health Plan Survey Database Chartbook. The CAHPS Database releases an annual Chartbook that presents summary-level results for the CAHPS Health Plan Survey.

Clinician & Group

The CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey (CG-CAHPS) Database is the newest component of the CAHPS Database. It was developed in response to the growing demand for comparative results for the various versions of the Clinician & Group Survey, including the 12-month and Visit versions.
The CAHPS Database has developed several products for the participants of the CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey Database:
CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey Database Chartbook. The CAHPS Database releases an annual CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey Database Chartbook that presents summary-level results for the CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey.
  • Online Reporting System: This Web-based reporting system allows users to view, print, and download custom reports of CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey results. Participating organizations submitting data to the CAHPS Database will be able to view their own results compared to appropriate benchmarks through a password-protected section of the Online Reporting System.

Funding and Participation Fees

The CAHPS Database is supported through contract funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Thus far, this funding has allowed us to waive participation fees provided that data are submitted according to our specifications and submission deadlines. Fees may be charged to cover the costs of custom analyses and technical assistance, and for compiling data files in response to authorized requests.

National Healthcare Quality Report and Disparities Report

The CAHPS Database are key resources for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's National Healthcare Quality Report and National Healthcare Disparities Report. These annual documents are designed to support policymakers in monitoring the Nation's progress toward improved health care quality.
