New Infographic Shows Outpatient vs. Inpatient Surgeries

A new AHRQ infographic titled Inpatient vs. Outpatient Surgeries in U.S. Hospitals has been released, drawing on data from HCUP Statistical Brief #188 Surgeries in Hospital-Owned Outpatient Facilities, 2012. The infographic shows nearly half (48.9 percent) of 19 million surgeries performed in community hospitals in 28 States were outpatient surgeries. Surgeries most often performed in the outpatient setting were eye surgeries (98.8 percent); ear surgeries (91.8 percent); and nose, mouth, and throat surgeries (86.7 percent). Surgeries most often performed in the inpatient setting were obstetric surgeries (97.7 percent); respiratory surgeries (86.9 percent); and cardiovascular surgeries (71.7 percent).

The infographic is available on the HCUP-US Website in PDF, JPEG, and text formats. Please contact HCUP User Support with questions or comments.

HCUP Q&A

Questions:
I want to place my order for HCUP databases and supplemental files online through the HCUP Central Distributor, but I have a few questions.

  • Am I required to create an account before I place an order?
  • Where can I find prices and availability of HCUP databases and supplemental files?
  • How long will it take to receive the HCUP databases I order?
  • Who can I contact for help?

Answers:
Am I required to create an account before I place an order?
Yes, you must have an account to place an order. You can browse the catalog of HCUP databases and add items to your shopping cart without an account; however, you cannot proceed to check out without logging in to your account. The Data Use Agreement (DUA) training is required to set up an account.

Where can I find prices and availability of HCUP databases and supplemental files?
Complete database availability and pricing information is located in the Database Catalog, which is found by navigating to the online HCUP Central Distributor web page.

How long will it take to receive the HCUP databases I order?
Typically, the HCUP Central Distributor ships orders for HCUP Nationwide databases (NIS, NEDS, and KID) within 5–7 business days of receiving all completed documents and payment information. Orders for HCUP State databases (SID, SASD, and SEDD) may take an additional 1–2 business days to complete because the required Statement of Intended Use must be reviewed by AHRQ on behalf of the State data organizations (HCUP Partners) that provide their data to HCUP. If your order is approved, State databases are typically shipped within 7–10 business days of receiving all completed documents and payment information.

Please note that all databases in an individual order will be shipped together. If your order includes both Nationwide and State databases, they will be sent in one shipment upon AHRQ’s approval of your Statement of Intended Use for the State database(s).

Who can I contact for help?
For more information about ordering HCUP databases and supplemental files, please navigate to the HCUP Central Distributor and review the Ordering FAQs. You may also contact the HCUP Central Distributor by email atHCUPDistributor@ahrq.gov or by phone (toll free) at (866) 556-4287.
