A new report, “Intended and Unintended Births in the United States: 1982-2010” is now available on the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) webpage (www.cdc.gov/nchs/nsfg.htm) or more directly at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/ nhsr/nhsr055.pdf.
The report, by NSFG analysts William Mosher, Jo Jones, and Joyce Abma, shows trends since 1982 in whether a woman wanted to get pregnant just before the pregnancy occurred. About 1 out of 3 births (37%) in the United States are unintended at the time of conception. The overall proportion unintended has not declined significantly since 1982. Unintended Births are presented by a variety of demographic characteristics for all women 15-44 years of age in the United States.
