Increasing Medical Record Security
The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) is a cooperative agreement partner of National eHealth Collaborative (NeHC).
Program Description:
As health information exchange becomes more prevalent, privacy and security around user identification will be paramount. On Wednesday, September 19 from 1:00 - 2:30PM EDT, Dr. Paul Tuten, Senior Consultant at the State HIE Program of the Office of the National Coordinator for HIT (ONC), Dr. Bill Braithwaite, CMO at Anakam, Dr. Michael Nelson, Vice President of Healthcare Strategy and Business Development at Equifax, and Drew McNichol, Technology Director of HEALTHeLINK will join NeHC to discuss the challenges of authentication and user identification and examine potential methods to address them. Dr. Tuten will give a regulatory update and brief background of the issue of medical record security. Dr. Braithwaite will then present on how electronic health records (EHRs) and health information exchanges (HIEs) can meet the need for more consistent medical care and the implications for data security and privacy. Dr. Nelson will then discuss the intricacies of patient privacy as it relates to patient access to records and Drew McNichol of HEALTHeLINK will discuss their use of multifactor authentication.
