CDC Leaders Join U.N. Sustainable Development Summit in New York
On September 25, CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden and Acting Director for CDC’s Center for Global Health (CGH) Dr. Rebecca Martin will join 193 world leaders at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit as they commit to the 17 goals that comprise the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Recognizing that poverty presents the greatest challenge to a healthy environment, the 17 goals that comprise the Agenda aim to end poverty and reduce inequality in all nations around the world. The Agenda aligns with PEPFAR’s goals to build sustainable health systems so that all people have access to HIV and TB prevention, care and treatment.
During the three-day summit, Drs. Frieden and Martin will be meeting with a number of countries and partners to explore how CDC will work with them to reach the UN 2030 Agenda goals and PEPFAR’s goal of sustainable health systems to achieve an AIDS-free generation. PEPFAR invests resources strategically and geographically to reach populations with greatest risk for HIV and TB with evidence-based programs and focuses on transparency and accountability for impact.
