Overall Learning Purpose/Goal
The purpose of the monograph is to provide a continuing education resource to health care providers interested in diagnostic and management strategies for patients with suspected, acute, or chronic gout.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify signs, symptoms, and risk factors for gout.
- Summarize the evidence for the accuracy and specificity of various diagnostic tests and strategies, including the accuracy and safety of specific tests.
- Summarize the evidence, including relative benefits and harms, on pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic strategies for the management of acute gout attacks.
- Discuss the benefits and harms of different pharmacologic therapies for managing hyperuricemia in gout patients.
For Pharmacists: Provide accurate and appropriate counsel as part of the treatment team.
For Registered Nurses: Provide appropriate care and counsel for patients and their families.

John D. FitzGerald is a health services researcher who has focused on policy analysis for Orthopedic procedures. Dr. FitzGerald completed his medical school at Tufts University in 1993. He completed his medical residency training at University of California Los Angeles in 1996. Dr. FitzGerald served as Chief Medical Resident prior to doing a specialty fellowship in Rheumatology. Since 1999, Dr. FitzGerald has been a faculty member in the Division of Rheumatology.
