National Donor Day

National donor Day
February 14 was National Donor Day.
Donor day focuses on five points of life: organs, tissue, marrow, platelets, and blood.
Many nonprofit health organizations sponsor blood and marrow drives and organ/tissue sign-ups across the nation.
Currently, about 119,000 men, women and children are on the national transplant waiting list.

HIV/AIDS in rural America

Faced with time and distance barriers along with enduring social bias, HIV-positive rural dwellers are less likely to find a clinic near their homes, more apt to drop out of care and more vulnerable to pervasive stigma where they live and work, experts said at a recent webinar.

Reports of disparities in HIV care come on the heels of recent studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that found lower adherence to "healthy behaviors" among rural residents – particularly smoking cessation – and gaps in the availability of care across a range of health conditions.

The National Institutes of Health announced a new funding opportunity for organizations interested in helping engage volunteers in the All of Us Research Program
All of Us is an ambitious effort to gather data over time from 1 million or more people living in the United States, with the ultimate goal of accelerating research and improving health.
NIH is designating up to $5 million per year over the next three years to support community-led outreach efforts to complement the program’s current efforts.
Eligible organizations include nonprofits, other community and faith-based organizations, minority-serving institutions and local governments, among others, who will support engagement with participant or provider communities. Applications are due on March 24, 2017, and NIH plans to issue awards in May 2017.
