National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report Chartbook Features Maternal and Child Health Care
A section on Maternal and Child Health Care (MCHC) is available in the new Healthy Living Chartbook from the 2014 National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report (QDR). The MCHC section features 12 measures, including measures of periods of uninsurance among children, prenatal care, parent communication with providers, birth trauma, and emergency department use for asthma and mental health reasons. Data are shown for subgroups of children, revealing a number of disparities. For example, black and Hispanic children were more likely than white children to have periods of uninsurance. Adolescents in non-metropolitan areas were less likely than children in metropolitan areas to have received the vaccine that can prevent meningitis. Many trends in quality and disparities are positive. For example, children ages 19-35 months from poor, low-income, and middle-income households could achieve benchmarks for recommended vaccinations within a year on current trends. There are considerable State-by-State variations for measures for which data were available.
