Global patient outcomes after elective surgery: prospective cohort study in 27 low-, middle- and high-income countries.

International Surgical Outcomes Study group. Br J Anaesth. 2016;117:601-609.

This prospective cohort study examined perioperative safety across 27 countries. Investigators found a significant rate of complications and a 0.5% mortality rate in the 7 days following surgery. They suggest that increasing access to surgical treatment must be accompanied by efforts to bolster perioperative safety.
