This position is located in CDC’s Office of Non-Communicable Disease, Injury and Environmental Health (ONDIEH), National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC), Division of Analysis, Research and Practice Integration (DARPI).  DARPI works to integrate science and practice to prevent injuries and violence. DARPI leads a diverse portfolio of work across four priority areas: Data, Knowledge, Practice and Evaluation. DARPI’s work in these areas is underscored by its’ emphasis on innovation, partnership and collaboration.
DARPI provides a focus for data, surveillance and economic work, support for state violence and injury prevention programs, program evaluation and improved linkages between research and practice in violence and injury prevention. 
DARPI is seeking highly qualified candidates for a full-time position as Director, DARPI.  The ideal candidate will have expertise in injury prevention and violence prevention, demonstrated ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders; project planning and organizational skills; strong management skills; and the ability to translate complex scientific or technical information for a variety of audiences.
Incumbent will:
  • Develop and maintain relationships among a variety of national and international public health and medical organizations associated with violence prevention, other government agencies, academic institutions, and state and local health departments.
  • Plan, manage, and evaluate all the programmatic and research activities of the Division Search, synthesize, and interpret information relevant to public health.
  • Participate in developing Center program policy and objectives, short and long-term goals, program strategies and activities, and operating policies.
  • Direct and manage the operations of the Division with primary responsibility for providing leadership and guidance to Division staff.
  • Plan, coordinate, manage, and evaluate all Division activities. Determine allocation of human and financial resources for the Division and assure compliance with related legal requirements. The incumbent will supervise and have line authority over the Deputy Director, branch chiefs, and other professional and support staff.
  • Execute the administrative and personnel management responsibilities related to the accomplishment of the mission of the Division. Deal with personnel management matters affecting the organization, with personnel actions affecting employees, and with personnel-related actions having program impact including optimal organizational structure and staffing needs. Oversee the recruitment, training, and career development of program, research, and support personnel necessary to accomplish the Division's mission.
  • Initiate and monitor research and programmatic activities focused on reducing injury and violence by providing high quality and innovative data products, supports state injury and prevention control projects, injury surveillance and data visualization, informatics, program evaluation, the dissemination and application of science into program practice. Produces new scientific knowledge that informs policies, practice, and programs in the injury field.
  • Develop and maintain relationships among a variety of national and international public health and medical organizations associated with injury and violence prevention, other government agencies, academic institutions, state and local health departments, and non-traditional partners. Identify opportunities for collaboration within CDC, with other Federal Agencies, and with partner organizations on issues of importance to the Division and Center.
  • Provides of focus for data, analyses, surveillance, research, economic work, support for violence prevention and injury prevention programs program evaluation and improved linkage between research and practice in violence and injury prevention.
  • Serve as a principal contact within CDC and DHHS for injury and violence prevention and control activities. Represent NCIPC and CDC at official professional and scientific meetings that address injury and violence prevention. Serve as a spokesperson for CDC on injury and violence prevention.
  • Determine the Division's overall policies and approaches to be followed to achieve the missions of the Division and the Center. Evaluate activities to determine which programs areas are most productive, which are worthy of support in reaching goals, and which should be emphasized or curtailed. Develop evidence-based public health practices, policies or programs that prevent or reduce injuries and violence.
  • Uphold the scientific and operational programs within the Division. Serve as one of the Center's senior advisors in planning and coordinating projects in support of major Center and Agency priorities. Provide expert  advice and consultation to the Director of Center and all other Center's on the role of Division in CDC programs including, research directions, and program priorities, policies and activities using his/her unique professional expertise and CDC wide perspective.
  • Plan, develop, and implement the Divisions policy and program objectives, developing operating plans, and evaluating progress.
  • Develop special projects and activities from broad program goals through the application of sound managerial and leadership concepts and practices with a view toward violence prevention. Maintain continuous critical review of all policy and project objectives of the Division and ensures that overall program plans are carried out as efficiently and effectively as possible with maximum utilization of resources.
  • Perform non- clinical duties involving the evaluation of research or the identifications of causes or sources of injury and violence. Additionally, applies epidemiological principles and/or procedures to investigate, review, analyze, and/or determine the cause(s) or problems. Substantive, multi-layered, and/or multi¬dimensional recommendations and/or courses of action to carry out control procedures, streamline public health processes and procedures, knowledge bases, and/or effect new approaches to resolve programmatic issues contribute to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the CDC/ATSDR disease prevention, control and health promotion mission.
  • Develop, evaluate, and implement innovative statistical, economic, policy research, computer programming and data management methods for application to injury surveillance, epidemiologic studies, program evaluation and programmatic activities.
  • Responsible for effective programs and policies that are monitored and evaluated for which are then disseminated for program accountability and program improvement. Responsible for generating and moving practice-based knowledge into the practice and research fields.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and global partners to provide technical assistance to global partners for data collection, trainings, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of scientific findings.
  • Provide expert consultation in statistics, economics, policy research, programming and data management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
The successful candidate will possess a degree in an academic field related to public health, health sciences, social sciences, or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position.
In addition to the above requirement, the candidate must possess a MD or PhD degree.
