Publicly reported hospital quality ratings are intended to promote safety and provide consumers with transparency, but they have become increasingly complex. This online survey measured how the Leapfrog Group quality rating system and cost affected patients' hypothetical selection of hospitals. Patients chose quality over cost in almost all scenarios, particularly when the differential was large.
