Trainee autonomy and patient safety.

    Reduced resident work hours and insufficient senior surgeon availability due to production pressure are practice characteristics that can hinder surgical resident autonomy. This commentary explores how the overarching goal of patient safety may result in unintended consequences that prevent residents from achieving the competencies needed for independent practice.
