One of the important goals of health information technology is to make it easier for individuals to have convenient, secure electronic access to their personal health information, which empowers them to participate better in managing their own health, enhances communications with providers, and improves care coordination. National eHealth Collaborative (NeHC) recently released the Patient Engagement Framework, a model created to guide healthcare organizations in developing and strengthening their patient engagement strategies through the use of eHealth tools and resources. Additionally, the Bipartisan Policy Center’s recent report, Improving Quality and Reducing Costs in Health Care: Engaging Consumers Using Electronic Tools found that engaging consumers more fully in their own health and healthcare not only improves the experience of care for patients and their families, but also improves the quality and cost effectiveness of care.

Whether you are a provider, payer, EHR vendor, developer, patient, consumer advocacy organization, or other interested party, join us to learn about some of the tools that are available now and how you can be a part of the movement to help patients better manage their care through health IT.

What You Can Expect:
A discussion of ONC and cross-agency initiatives shaping the landscape of consumer engagement via eHealth, including:

  • The expansion of "Blue Button" (a simple way for individuals to download their data electronically) from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to a nationwide, ONC-led initiative to empower consumers.

  • How Blue Button and the Stage 2 requirements for Meaningful Use that support patient and family engagement relate to each other.

  • New apps, templates for visualizing data, and consumer communications tools that are available for your use.

  • Current and future policy initiatives that support consumer engagement via eHealth

  • Actions your organization can take to advance consumer engagement via eHealth
