Now Available: AHRQ 2018 SOPS Hospital User Database Report

AHRQ’s Surveys on Patient Safety Culture™ (SOPS™) Hospital Survey: 2018 User Database Report is now available. The report provides results from 382,834 health care providers and other staff in 630 U.S. hospitals that administered the survey and chose to submit their data to the Hospital SOPS database. Results are presented by hospital characteristics (bed size, teaching status, ownership, and geographic region) and respondent characteristics (work area, staff position, interaction with patients, and tenure with hospital unit).

When comparing results over time, 35 percent of the 306 hospitals that submitted to the 2016 and 2018 Hospital Database increased 5 percentage points or more on the Nonpunitive Response to Error composite. This composite measures the extent to which staff feel that their mistakes and event reports are not held against them and that mistakes are not kept in their personnel file.
