Educating for the 21st-century health care system: an interdependent framework of basic, clinical, and systems sciences.

Two decades ago, applying systems sciences to health care improvement was an innovative approach. However, work is still needed to integrate systems science into medical training. This commentary presents a framework used at an academic medical center to guide physicians in incorporating systems-based practice as a vital element of their work.
